The convention will take place at Rosen Shingle Creek between July 18-22 next year, according to fraternity leaders. A community service project is part of the 83rd Grand Chapter Meeting.

“We strongly believe it’s important to provide a service to help fulfill a community need in every city where we have our conclave,” said Tony Foster, co-chairman of the fraternity’s local convention planning team, in a news release….

Orlando and Winter Park alumni chapters to host 83rd Grand Chapter Meeting July 18-22, 2017

ORLANDO – Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. today announced that Orlando will welcome more than 10,000 members, their families and associates for the organization’s 83rd Grand Chapter Meeting (conclave) on July 18-22, 2017.  The fraternity made the announcement at a press conference held in the heart of the city, at the Lake Eola Amphitheater.

Local officials on site to give the fraternity an official welcome included Sen. Geraldine Thompson, D-Orlando; Orange County commissioners Bryan Nelson, District 2, and Victoria Siplin, District 6; and Winter Park Vice Mayor Sarah Sprinkel.  Extending greetings on behalf of the convention’s host hotel, Rosen Shingle Creek, was Travers Johnson, associate director of sales for Rosen Hotels & Resorts.

Orlando lastly served as the biennial conclave’s host venue in 1991.  This time around, the five-day series of meetings and social activities is expected to infuse millions of dollars into the local economy and leave a legacy of community good.  “It’s the basis for our theme, Leave a Legacy:  Build a Future,” said the fraternity’s international president (grand polemarch) Thomas Battles, Jr.  “We aim to leave a significant and indelible mark on Orlando through public service initiatives from now through the conclave and long afterward.”

One is the fraternity’s new partnership with OneBlood, the local blood center, through which both will sponsor quarterly blood drives and promote the importance for the need for blood donations by African Americans.  The first blood drive took place during the press conference.  According to OneBlood spokesman Pat Michaels, “African American blood donors hold the power to save other African American’s in need of a blood transfusion. That’s because donors with genetically-similar blood are more likely to be a match for patients from the same ethnic background.”

Fraternity Announces Orlando site for 2017 convention

(Orlando, FL July 14, 2016)  OneBlood, the local blood center, and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., a national service organization with more than 150,000 members and chapters located on campuses nationwide, have joined forces by holding a blood drive and promoting the importance for the need for blood donations by African Americans.  Coinciding with the blood drive, the fraternity will hold a press conference at the Lake Eola Amphitheater announcing Orlando as the site for its 2017 national convention.

Press Conference

11:30 a.m.

Blood Drive

10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

101 North Rosalind Avenue

Orlando, FL 32801

Each blood donor will receive a free OneBlood Cooler Bag. Appointments can by calling (888) 9-DONATE or visiting www.oneblooddonor.org and using the sponsor code #36343.

According to, Pat Michaels, spokesman for OneBlood, the local blood center, “African-American blood donors hold the power to save other African-American’s in need of a blood transfusion. That’s because donors with genetically-similar blood are more likely to be a match for patients from the same ethnic background.”

When it comes to blood donations, researchers have found that African-Americans are under-represented among donors, and that minority donors in general are less likely to become regular donors. Increasing African-American donations is vital because blood types O and B, the blood types of about 70 percent of African-Americans, are also the blood types most in demand.

Genetically-similar blood is preferred for those who need repeated blood transfusions, and for conditions like sickle cell disease (SCD), which primarily affects African-Americans. Blood that closely matches that of a patient is less likely to be rejected by the patient and can mean fewer complications after a transfusion.

African-American blood donors are more likely to be a match for the majority of individuals with SCD in the United States, making them ideal donors to help SCD patients receiving regular blood transfusions.

A predominantly African American fraternity established in 1911, Kappa Alpha Psi locally is well known for its community services.  The most notable center on mentoring youth and awarding college scholarships based on financial need as well as academic achievement.  “So, we’re really looking forward to adding this project to the list,” said Tony Foster, immediate past president of the fraternity’s Orlando Alumni Chapter.  “It’s one that touches us all personally, and it’s comforting to know that we can take action to help our brothers and sisters through such a quick and simple good deed.”

During the next year, culminating with Kappa Alpha Psi’s convention during the week of July 18-22, 2017, One Blood and the fraternity will hold quarterly blood drives.  (The dates are pending.)  Additionally, Kappa Alpha Psi will publicize educational programs about blood donation targeted to African Americans.

Kappa Alpha Psi taps Orlando for 2017 convention site

Public announcement scheduled for July 15 at Lake Eola

Conventions large and small may be routine events in Orlando, but next year, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity’s 83rd Grand Chapter Meeting will bring a lot more to Central Florida than thousands of tourists – namely, fraternity members, their families and invited guests.

The fraternity’s biannual convention (conclave) will be held at the Rosen Shingle Creek from July 18-22, 2017.  A strong representation of Kappa’s 150,000-plus membership always attends, and that factor alone guarantees a positive economic effect locally.  However, this conclave will go further in making a mark on Orlando.  How?  A public service project is a key agenda item.  Why?  The fraternity intends to move the needle upward in improving the local community.

“We strongly believe it’s important to provide a service to help fulfill a community need in every city where we have our conclave,” explains Tony Foster, co-chairman of the fraternity’s local convention planning team.  “And for 2017, the project will align well with the conclave’s theme:  Leave a Legacy … Build a Future.  Our plan is to ensure that Kappa Alpha Psi leaves its stamp on Orlando by creating or enhancing a project or program that will have long-lasting value.”

The project chosen will be revealed on July 15 when the fraternity formally announces its choice of Orlando for its 83rd national convention.  The brief event, which will be open to news media and the public, will be held at the Lake Eola Amphitheater at 11:30 a.m.  Public officials representing local and state government, corporate partners and Kappa Alpha Psi leaders, will give remarks.

“The July 15 event will go far beyond setting the stage for a dynamic roster of activities leading to our conclave,” said Erick Wicker, who co-chairs the planning team with Foster.  “It will give us great opportunity to share information about local Kappa Alpha Psi initiatives that benefit youth and families and how others can join us in those efforts.  Our dedication to community service is never-ending, and we welcome new partners and supporters in helping us make a difference.”
