Job, health & college opportunities on Kappa Alpha Psi’s national convention public agenda

ORLANDO – Free events next week, presented by the Orlando and Winter Park alumni chapters of Kappa Alpha Psi as part of the fraternity’s biannual national convention, will serve three important community needs: obtaining employment, improving health care knowledge and accessing information on college curricula and funding.

The convention will be held at the Rosen Shingle Creek resort from July 18-22, but related activities will begin on Saturday. A strong representation of Kappa’s 150,000-plus members attends, a factor that guarantees a positive economic effect locally. The five-day series of business meetings and social activities is expected to generate a $10 million to $20 million economic impact, and leave a legacy of community good through events such as these:

1. Community Health & Wellness Fair. Saturday, July 15 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Northwest Community Center, located at 3955 W. D. Judge Drive in Orlando. Participating providers:

  • Black Nurses Rock
  • Black Pharmacists Association
  • The Center for Change, Inc.
  • Central Florida Blood Bank
  • Dr. Brian O. Coleman, D.M.D., P.A.

  • Dr. Sydel Y Legrande, family practice specialist

Expect plenty to keep the children occupied when not visiting with a health and wellness providers. Free lunch, bounce houses, giveaways (e.g., student backpacks), and more.

2. College Fair — Anyone seeking higher educational opportunities should check out the College Fair at the Rosen Shingle Creek resort on July 19 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Here’s a sampling of the colleges slated to participate:
